SSPC QP9 Commercial Painting Contract Certification Gives Alpine a Competitive Edge

By: Dave Scaturro
February 2023

In the second quarter of 2021, Alpine was approached about doing an exterior painting project for Montville High School in New Jersey, but as the scope of work expanded, the assignment went into a public bid. No longer just an exterior painting job, the project was upgraded to painting the building’s roof and drip caps, and repainting several areas of the siding around the perimeter walls. During the bidding, the client’s primary desire was to secure a painting contractor that had very strong qualifications for the assignments.

Alpine was able to secure the contract after successfully meeting each of the multiple program expectations set forth during the bidding process. Additionally, Alpine submitted its bid as a leading QP9 certified painting contractor, granting it a strong competitive edge and setting it apart from other contractors.

The process of obtaining QP9 certification verified Alpine’s ability to perform surface preparation and architectural coating application on commercial and institutional buildings and their interiors. Through certification, the program asserted that as a commercial painting contractor, Alpine has the personnel, organization, qualifications, procedures, knowledge and capability to produce quality surface preparation and coating application of architectural paints in the commercial market.

Upon its bid selection, Alpine quickly began preparations for the project which consisted of a robust management team that included Alpine’s crew leader, Jan Petras, Alpine’s Project Manager, Mitch Epstein, along with an architect, facility manager and school maintenance manager. Immediately after an initial site walkthrough of the school’s roof area, which included notation of potential hazards, work conditions, an ASTMD-3359 adhesion testing, and color selection, the project was scheduled to begin.

With a project crew of eight people, Alpine commenced the process by power washing all surface areas using hand and power tools to clean, and by making on-the-spot repairs along the way. Once completed, the area had a full prime and two full finished coating applications. Material and equipment used included: Sherwin Williams Macropoxy 646 Epoxy Mastic Primer, a high solids, polyamide epoxy, and Sherwin Williams Acrolon Ultra, a High Performance acrylic polyurethane designed to provide long term UV Protection for High Visibility Structures. The material was applied by brush and roller and three Graco 1095 Airless Sprayers.

The two month (June 28th to August 30th) assignment covered approximately 29,000 square feet of surface area. A major concern during the project revolved around a few incidences of high temperatures where work needed to be paused or paint application times moved to protect both the crew and to ensure proper coating application. Another important safety concern resulted from working on elevated surfaces in the roofing area, making it subject to inconsistent wind patterns. Because of the variable winds, the action of overspraying, especially in an area where the school had recently installed solar panels, became a troubleshooting concern for the Alpine crew.

At the end of the day, Alpine’s years of experience and ingenuity when solving any major painting challenge, did not delay or create a problem for the crew even with the high heat and variable wind patterns. As one of the largest commercial painters in the New Jersey and New York area, Alpine prides itself in completing large painting projects in short periods of time, with industry recognized standards of excellence in application of paints and coatings in commercial and institutional structures.
