Alpine Resurrects the Beauty and Splendor of St. Rose of Lima

The Archdiocese of Newark hired Alpine Painting & Sandblasting to paint the interior of St. Rose of Lima, a church that was built in the 1800s, renovated in 1912 and restructured in 1947. The condition of the structure at the beginning of the project was poor with substantial paint peeling, plaster damage due to roof leaks, and an aging plaster dating back to its original construction.

Alpine’s assessment of the project showed that it would involve the clearing, preparing and painting of church surfaces to include walls, molds, ceiling, doors, door frames, and window frames. The process was also determined to involve setting up scaffolding; scraping loosened paint and fixed damaged plaster; and creating master molding that needed to be applied in damaged areas.

The completion of the project within the tight time frame was critical to the client as the church could only be closed to parishioners for one month. The challenge to Alpine then became adhering to the timeline in order to accommodate additional work requests that were made throughout the project. Alpine worked double and triple shifts in order to accommodate all the additional work orders and keep to the project time frame originally quoted.

A Dedication to Getting the Job Done Right

The client made a few last minute requests around the color scheme. They had a vision of what the project would look like and the desired color pallet. That vision changed multiple times during the duration of the project. Alpine provided twelve different color samples to ensure the customer would be happy with the finished results.

Alpine went above and beyond the number of color samples presented to the client for such a project. The team accommodated the multiple requests, applying the samples in the various areas that were to be painted, and offered counsel and coaching on color combinations and standard paint usage by other similar churches. In the end the client settled on three colors.

In addition to the challenge of completing the project within the specified time frame despite the number of additional requests and changes made by the client throughout the process, there were several sensitive religious items that needed to be covered and protected throughout the project completion. Mass covering and the protection of all the areas that were not being painted was just as important as making sure a quality paint job was executed.

Operational Excellence Reveals A Gift for Ingenuity

Alpine had to level up the plaster surfaces by sanding, removing the loose and flaking paint and plaster, and providing plaster repairs to a level three finish. Alpine caulked wood mouldings and used wood filler to repair the surfaces prior to painting. Alpine used PCA P14 when explaining the level of surface preparation the client could expect and PCA P3 when the client needed help choosing a color.

The location’s sanctuary was three stories tall and in order to access the ceiling and trim, Alpine erected an access system scaffolding in order to provide the crew with access to the areas that needed to be painted. Alpine erected and dismantled the scaffolding to access each section that needed to be painted. Alpine chose not to use lifts because the church floors would not be able to hold the weight.

Aesthetics were very important for this assignment, as well as the longevity of the actual paint job. Alpine selected a high end coating system for the project: Sherwin Williams’ Emerald and Cashmere. Emerald was used on door window frames and Cashmere was used on the ceiling.

The Alpine crew used spraying, brushing and rolling to complete the project. The crew was highly trained to paint churches so they were able to get the job done faster.

Also a standout was Alpine’s process as a whole in how they estimated the project, explained the dos and don’ts around the substrate, and how it conducted the reconstruction walkthrough with the crew leader, project manager, client and estimator. The walkthrough was conducted to make sure everyone in the project was on the same page moving forward and no details were missed.
