Scope Of Work
Manchester Grand Hyatt on San Diego Bay became one of the largest and tallest waterfront hotels on the west coast with the addition of this new tower. Located on over three acres adjacent to Seaport Village, the 34-story tower expansion provided 750 additional guest rooms to the Hyatt property.
The new tower at the Manchester Grand Hyatt's façade complements the exisiting tower. The hotel's main entrance is highlighted by imported dimensional stone from ground level to the vaulted metal roof, which serves as the mid-point of the towers. A central lobby, 30,000 square-foot ballroom, and 34,000 square-foot exhibit hall connect the addition to the exisiting tower.
Clark’s project team met the 24-month schedule without sacrificing craftsmanship or impacting the day-to-day operations of the surrounding facilities. Clark completed the project, including the connecting lobby, while the hotel was under full operation. Careful coordination and scheduling ensured minimal disruption to the hotel and its guests. Additionally, Clark monitored construction so as not to impact an adjacent marina.
The expansion included the construction of an elevator shaft and service corridor 30 feet below sea level. To construct these belowground, it was necessary to dewater the construction site, which is adjacent to an old gasoline station site and the former San Diego Police Department Headquarters. Both facilities included underground gasoline storage tanks that leaked and contaminated the surrounding area. Clark managed the treatment of the contaminated water up to 500,000 gallons per day.
