Scope Of Work

The Ruth and Raymond Perelman Center for Advanced Medicine is a four-story, 500,000sf ambulatory care and cancer center located on the campus of the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania. The pavilion was designed to serve as the central hub of a modular and expandable complex—the largest capital project undertaken by the University of Pennsylvania Health System.

Penn Medicine is a long-term client of LF Driscoll. Since LF Driscoll completed construction of the pavilion and outpatient facilities in 2008, we have performed four expansions, increasing the complex to 1.7 million sf.

Roberts Proton Therapy Center, completed 2009

West Tower Expansion: Smilow Center for Translational Research, completed 2010

South Pavilion Expansion, including the Jordan Medical Education Center, completed 2016

South Tower Expansion, including the Center for Advanced Cellular Therapeutics (CACT), completed 2016

The U-shaped structural steel facility contains a parking garage three levels below grade. The four levels above grade are clad in wood and include two levels of administrative offices with an eight-story structural glass atrium delivering daylight throughout the building. This design element is part of a patient-focused mission that coordinates diagnosis and treatment within a healthy setting. The examination rooms, labs, and operating rooms are placed in the center of the floor plates. Departments are located adjacent to one another to promote interaction among physicians. Seven elevator and stair cores provide circulative access throughout the building.

In addition to patient-focused design and care, the Perelman Center is designed to anticipate and respond to future trends in medicine. A 30 x 30sf (9.15 x 9.15-meter) grid provides flexibility to reconfigure departments.

A reflective roof, electric car charging stations, bike parking, construction materials recycling and the use of local steel contributed to a LEED® Silver certification.
