Scope Of Work
The Smokehouse Bridge project consisted of the replacement of two existing side-by-side bridges connecting the northeast portion of Marco Island to the west side of the island. This was accomplished by replacing one bridge at a time while diverting traffic to the other side.
Project Challenges and Mitigations
Each bridge typically carried one-way traffic, so temporarily converting each bridge to a two-way road required careful traffic control. Additionally, the bridges were pile-supported; QE replaced each 24 sq. inch concrete pile, inserted 90’ deep into the water. Pile driving, which took place in close proximity to residential areas, required a 250-ton crane. In addition to taking extreme care when positioning the crane and other heavy equipment, QE had to carefully monitor the vibrations while driving piles to prevent structural damage. While difficult, QE’s crews rose to the challenge.
However, QE’s biggest obstacle on the Smokehouse Bridge project was the schedule. The original time frame called for an 18-month contract, but the proposed schedule was cut down to just ten months to accommodate for a major renovation project at the nearby Marriott Beach Resort. Even with several changes along the way, QE was able to complete the project in 13 months. In this short timeframe, QE not only replaced the two bridges, but also completed a considerable amount of utility work, along with new roadway paving and a concrete bridge deck.
