Scope Of Work
Construction of two shafts on opposite sides of the Hudson River are allowing NYCDEP to construct the Rondout West Bypass Tunnel to facilitate repairs to the Delaware Aqueduct. Built between 1939 and 1944, the Aqueduct supplies half of NYC’s drinking water from the Catskill mountain reservoirs, and serves one million residents of Orange, Putnam, Ulster and Westchester counties.
For each site, at Newburg and Wappinger, Yonkers constructed the surface infrastructure to support the shaft construction. Work included grading, excavation and rock blasting, stormwater protection measures/drainage, extending utilities to the site, and construction of internal roadways and the contractor work areas.
A site entrance was constructed from Route 9W for the Newburgh site (Shaft 5B). Yonkers widened Route 9W and constructed new acceleration, deceleration and center turn lanes to accommodate the construction traffic and assure safe entrance to the site.
In Wappinger, an existing NYCDEP site, Yonkers constructed an underground concrete vault and piping for back flow preventers, and a detention pond.
