Scope Of Work
In the wake of the WTC terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, Yonkers Contracting Company participated in the efforts to help New York City recover. This culminated in Yonkers leading a tri-venture team to work in partnership with the Port Authority of NY & NJ to restore PATH service to the World Trade Center.
Working in design-build style framework, initial efforts focused on working with PANYNJ and its designers to develop the design while simultaneously commencing early-action construction. As design completed, the contract was converted to a Guaranteed Maximum Price contract.
In just 22-months, the concept was turned into an operating railroad – two months ahead of schedule. Work under this $460 million contract included: constructing a temporary PATH station at the WTC site (including reconstruction of rail access to the site); completely renovating the two one-mile commuter rail tunnels beneath the Hudson River, constructing a cross-passageway between the tunnels on the NJ side; and rebuilding and modifying the Exchange Place Station. This effort relied upon over 1,000 workers, around the clock, 7 days per week and exhibits Yonkers’ ability to accomplish a significant organizational effort.
This project demonstrates Yonkers’ ability to successfully lead a project from concept to completion, manage an aggressive CPM schedule, and deliver infrastructure under challenging and complex conditions, as well as collaborate with engineers and the owner in a design-build relationship.
The project received several awards, including McGraw Hill’s New York Construction Project of the Year ? Transit award for 2004.
