Scope Of Work
Renewing elevated stations in the Bronx along the IRT Pelham Line –Buhre Avenue, Middletown Road, Zerega Avenue, Castle Hill Avenue, and the terminal station of Pelham Bay Park– has provided improved passenger facilities for commuters traveling the No. 6 train. The line carries two sets of express rail tracks and local tracks that stop at each station and runs above a major arterial roadway, Westchester Avenue. Construction work was completed two stations at a time with trains running on the express tracks during weekends, and vehicular and pedestrian traffic passing underneath.
New platform canopy roofs, station mezzanines, stairways from the street to station overhead, lighting and artwork throughout the stations are the visible improvements completed by Yonkers. In addition, new ADA boarding areas were installed for accessibility and tactile warning strips were replaced for passenger safety.
On the four in-line stations – Buhre, Middletown, Zerega and Castle Hill – work also included significant structural steel repairs and replacement of the running rail and through-span structures within the station limits. To expedite station renewal and minimize passenger impact, work was completed working at two stations concurrently during seven-month shut downs. Trains by-passed the stations on local and express tracks with crews working alongside.
As a terminus station, Pelham Bay Park was required to remain open while the station was renewed with also including repair of the bridge over the tracks.
