Scope Of Work

Building this 50,000 sf concourse to ease access to NJ Transit’s Commuter Rail was a challenging endeavor successfully completed by Yonkers Contracting Company. Working beneath the existing station required constructing a station within a station and modifying the support structures beneath the high rise structures at Penn Plaza.

In the southeast quadrant of Penn Station, between 31st and 33rd streets Seventh and Eighth avenues, building the concourse required selective demolition; removal and disposal of lead containing materials; excavation, backfill, concrete, structural steel, and mini-piles; masonry including extensive marble and granite; doors and windows; finishes and furnishings; specialty equipment; elevators and escalators; and associated mechanical, HVAC and electrical systems and equipment.

In the immediate aftermath of 9/11 the shuttered downtown PATH System detoured much of its Manhattan passenger service to Penn Station causing a massive overcrowding situation. Yonkers worked alongside NJ Transit’s engineering staff to accelerate completion by opening its stairways, escalators and concourse in phases knocking approximately one year off of the turnover of critical portions of the work.

Under a second contract, Yonkers built the 31st Street entrance at the north east corner of 31st St and Seventh Ave. It features ADA-compliant elevators, escalators and stairs connecting to the concourse, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling with exposed, open trusses open trusses reminiscent of the original Penn Station. The project utilized Yonkers’ skill in steel erection and working within occupied streets and sidewalks.
