Scope Of Work

Reconstructing the platforms and overpasses upgraded this key commuter rail station, provided passenger shelter areas and ADA access from the main station and commuter parking lots. Challenged with performing all work while the busy commuter rail station remained open for revenue service and without interrupting Metro-North or Amtrak’s rail service presented opportunities for Yonkers’ innovation.

Streamlining construction, rather than reconstruct the platforms in multiple phases, Yonkers proposed building a temporary platform north of the existing and providing a temporary overpass. This enabled the southern overpass to be demolished and all of the platform replaced in one stage instead of two. The existing northern overpass remained in operation (as a southern overpass) and continued to provide ADA-compliant (elevator) access to the platforms.

Platform reconstruction used pre-cast concrete segments hoisted onto reconstructed foundations. The new overpass structures required pile foundations due to the station’s proximity to the Hudson River. The new northern overpass was constructed adjacent to and slightly offset from the existing, requiring careful erection planning with the pre-fabricated segments hoisted into place over active rail tracks, requiring careful placement between power lines and the existing stair structure and platform.

Completed under budget and on-schedule, with no impact on train operations, this project demonstrates Yonkers’ ability to provide solutions that enhance projects.
